Guyana hosts over 90 competitors from seven CASA territories (Bahamas, Barbados, Bermuda, Cayman Island, Guyana, Jamaica & Organization of Eastern Caribbean States) for the 2011 Junior Caribbean Squash Championships. The seven day Championship is into the final day of the Individuals Event with the team event getting underway tomorrow. The Guyana Squash Association and their volunteers should be commended for hosting such a smooth and enjoyable event. The hospitality and attention to the athletes’ well-being is second to none.
It’s apparent that squash in Guyana is very much alive and well. In addition to a strong National Association Guyana is being represented in 7 out of the 8 finals of the Individuals Event. The big matches are drawing impressive crowds of spirited local youth spectators. The future for squash in Guyana continues to be bright with the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport building 2 public courts as a part of the newly created National Racquet Center.
Bermuda plays off for 3rd place in a total of five matches this afternoon. Check out the tournament website at: http://www.guyanasquash.org/cjst2011/

Thompson continued his steady and determined play in Guyana capturing an impressive win over 3rd seed Romario Constance of OESC. This win puts D’Vario into the semi-finals tonight at 8:20pm against Kale Wilson of T&T. Teammate Micah Franklin on D’Vario’s match “he played steady and countered off of Romario’s plays into the front corners.”
Madeleine Rose had a strong performance in her first match of the tournament. Coach Mount on her play “she hit some tight serves and moved the ball around nicely. She looks very comfortable and confident heading into the third round of play.”
Dylan Pratt secured his second victory of the tournament with some great length working his opponent side to side. The 3-0 score does not do justice to the long rallies and seesaw battle between the two youngsters. Teammate Alex Marshall on Dylan’s play “he handled the pressure like a pro….. Jonathan Walker of Jamaica had some impressive gets and pushed Dylan to the limit in the first game. Dylan battled from behind in the third game to lock the 3-0 victory.”

Micah Franklin fended off a ‘hot handed’ Jules Snagg of OECS in the first round of play in Boys U 19. Jules had a strong start in each of the games and mixed in some surprising attacking boasts from mid-court on the the left side. Franklin played steady working Snagg side to side with a mixture of working shots to the front court.
D’Vario Thompson showed great concentration and focus to contain a feisty OECS opponent. Thompson mixed in some attention-grabbing attacking shots with solid forcing drives. This was a tight match all the way through, but D’vario’s up tempo play secured a 3-1 victory.
Kion Knights had a solid showing in the first round of the Boys Under 15 draw. Madeleine Rose, 2nd seed in the Girls U13 draw starts here play tomorrow. Alex Marshall cruised through her first match and looks forward to her match with 2nd seed Charlotte Knaggs of T&T.
Noah Brown and Chris Stout pushed their ¾ seeded opponents to 3-1. Noah lost out to a fit Andrew Arjoon of Guyana. Andrew played steady throughout the match. Brown had his chances as he forced the play into the front of the court where he trapped Arjoon effectively. The match lacked nothing and no one in the crowd left disappointed as Arjoon and Brown displayed some diving gets, carved some brilliant volley drops into the front corners, extended rallies with excellent retrievals and if that wasn’t enough……the lights even went during play.
