The club is currently under going a bit of a face lift with the upstairs bar area and all four courts receiving a new lick of paint.

At some point this week you will probably see club member Chris Dawson precariously balanced on top of the scaffold attempting to reach the high corners of the BSRA courts. The bar area and courts 2 & 4 are complete, whilst courts 1 & 3 will be finished by the end of the week.

Squash fanatics Kevin Moynihan and David Kielty have headed back to Ireland after years at the BSRA via a few party destinations on the way….

Kevin, a member since Aug 2002 has been a lively member of the club competing regularly in the leagues and competitions and always supporting the ’social’ events. It has been said that at times that Kevin kept the bar open on his own!

Kielty is infamous in Bermuda for not only his squash talents but for a few crazy dance moves which have been seen occasionally.

The BSRA wishes Kevin and David all the best for the future. Your both welcome back any time.

Senior CASA – Team returns, finally….

Hurricane Dean 1
The Senior CASA Mens team finally returned to Bermuda late on Wednesday evening after being trapped in Jamaica by Hurricane Dean.

The distastrous trip which featured delayed flights, aircraft breakdowns and player injuries seemed to be coming together when the team finished top of their group beating top seeds Jamaica on the way. However, the bad luck returned when Hurricane Dean, at category 4 storm veered towards Jamaica cancelling the tournament and forcing all teams to try and get out of Jamaica as fast as possible. Bermuda and Guyana were the unlucky ones who were unable to get flights out despite camping out at the airport for 2 days. The team returning to the club and prepared for the storm and more importantly, the aftermath which included no power, no a/c, no showers, no $, lots of mosquitos and terribly… a lack of redstripe!

Anyway, the team are all back safe (maybe a little smelly) and sound and would like to thank all those who attempted to help them out while we were stuck.

The pictures are all available in the gallery section of this website.

Senior CASA – Bermuda defeat Guyana

An injury plagued Bermuda squash team fought against the odds to win their first match in the Senior CASA Squash Championships Team Event being held in Kingston, Jamaica.

Playing against Guyana, the Bermuda team reshuffled their playing order due to the ankle injury sustained by Patrick Foster. Foster dropped to #2, making way for Nick Kyme in the #1 spot, and the change paid off with Kyme beginning to find the form he displayed when playing on the professional circuit. He cruised to a comfortable 3-0 (9-3,9-3,9-1) win against Julian Chin.

Foster also won his match against Robert McDavid in 3 straight games (9-1, 9-0, 9-2), but team-mate Melrindo Caines, making his first appearance on court in the championships after sustaining a hamstring injury, was unable to play to his full potential against caribbean junior champion, Alex Arjoon. Caines showed his class in the first game which he narrowly lost 8-10, and continued to fight gamely, but lost the next two games 2-9, 4-9.

Michael Shrubb, the youngest member of the Bermuda Team had an impressive match against Raphael DeGroot, and sealed the win for Bermuda with an emphatic 3-0 victory (9-5,9-5,9-1)

Richard Van Liendon had a walkover in his match so the Bermuda Team defeated Guyana 4-1. Their next match will be an extremely tough encounter with the home nation, Jamaica.

Senior CASA – Shock losses for Foster and Kyme

Following the recent successful tour of Bermuda’s juniors to the British Virgin Islands to compete in the Junior CASA 2007 Squash championship, the Bermuda Senior Men’s Team are presently competing in the Senior CASA Squash Championships being held at the Liguanea Club in Kingston, Jamaica.

Bermuda’s five man team includes Bermuda Fast Forward Freight National Champion, Patrick Foster (seeded #1 in Men’s Singles), former professional Nick Kyme (seeded #2) along with Michael Shrubb, Melrindo Caines, and Richard Van Liendon.

Both Foster and Kyme cruised through their first round matches in 3 straight games. Foster defeated Marlon White of Barbados 3-0 (9-2, 9-2, 9-5) while Kyme eased through against another Barbadian, Fabian Goodridge 3-0 (9-4,9-1,9-0). Michael Shrubb had a tough encounter with #4 seed, Wayne Burrows of Jamaica, losing 3-0 (9-6, 9-1, 9-0) while Richard Van Liendon went down 3-0 to Mark Sealy of Barbados (9-2, 9-0, 9-3).

Unfortunately, Melrindo Caines was nursing a hamstring injury and decided to sit out the Singles.

Although seeded #1, Bermuda’s national champion, Patrick Foster suffered an ankle injury in training last week, and this no doubt contributed in major part to his shock defeat in the 2nd round to #9 seed Paul Deverteuill of Trinidad and Tobago 1-3 (9-6,7-9,5-9,5-9)

Nick Kyme won through to the quarter finals where he met the #6 seed, Gavin Cumberbatch of Barbados. According to Karen Anderson, writing for Squashsite.com, thi match was all about pace with both players trying to figure out each other’s game. Kyme starting well, using his pace and deft drop shots to draw Cumberbatch back and forth on the court, and he easily won the first game 9-3. However, Cumberbatch reversed his fortunes winning the next two games 9-5, 9-7 with some amazing retrievals and accurate shot making. These two games must have taken their toll on Kyme as the match came down to a matter of attrition with Cumberbatch winning 9-0 in the 4th.

Shrubb and Van Liendon lost in Men’s Consolation, but Van Liendon had an exhausting encounter with Robert McDavid of Guyana before succumbing 3-2 (9-3, 7-9,6-9,9-2,9-0) .

Said BSRA spokesman Roger Sherratt, “It was very disappointing to hear that Patrick was still having trouble with his ankle because he’s a great competitor who was strongly favoured to reach the Final. Since his retirement from the professional circuit Nick has been taking a well-earned break from squash to concentrate on his career, and we knew that with the high standard of squash in the Caribbean he would be sorely tested. We are now out of Singles competition but our Bermuda Team should be competitive in the Men’s Team event starting on Tuesday, depending on whether or not Patrick and Mel will be fit enough to play.

Bermuda team finish Junior CASA on a high note

Bermuda’s junior squash players ended their trip to the British Virgin Islands on a high note when the Boy’s Team won their play-off match against Barbados to finish 3rd overall in the Junior CASA (Caribbean) Squash Championship. Meanwhile the Girls Team went one better and reached the final of the Girls Team event before taking 2nd place overall after an epic match against Guyana.

In their play-off for 3rd the Bermuda Boy’s team had the closest of matches with the outcome depending on the key match between Micah Franklin (Under 17) and Barbadian Matthew Hutchinson. Kristian Muldoon (U15) totally dominated his match and triumphed without dropping a single point, Robert Maycock (U19) also crushed his opponent 9-1, 9-2, 9-3, while Beckett Simmons lost in straight games. Noah Browne fought brilliantly against the Barbadian No 2 in Under 19 after stepping in as a last minute replacement although he is actually Under 15. Browne lost 4-9, 8-10, 7-9. The crucial match was between Franklin and Garcia, and what a match it was. Franklin lost the first, leveled at 1 all, then fell behind 2-1 before making a strong recovery in the 4th to take it 9-2. It was all down to the 5th and final game and at 7-7 there was no predicting the outcome. Franklin, though, has a habit of never admitting defeat, and despite looking exhausted he rattled off the last two points to take the match and seal the Boy’s Team 3rd place finish.

Results of the Girls Final are not yet available (ED:now available see below) but the team lost in the Final to Guyana. Their performance in the Girls Team event has been described as the “surprise package of the tournament” according to Shane Slater reporting in Squash site (see http://www.squashsite.co.uk/caribbean-juniors.htm )

With their 2nd place in the Girls Team event, and 3rd place in the Boys Team event, the Bermuda Team placed 3rd overall which is considered to be an excellent result according to squash spokesman Roger Sherratt who says , “We sent the largest ever contingent to this year’s Junior CASA with quite a few comparative newcomers who were getting their first taste of international competition. These included 11 year old Becket Simmons, D’Vario Thompson, Juliette McComb, Jason Shrub and Korin Knights. Our Girls Team had the advantage of being led by Laura Robinson (U19) who is an experienced competitor while our youngest girl, 11 year old Emma Keane had the benefit of having played at this level last year. She finished up 3rd in Under 13 which is all the more remarkable because she will still be playing in this age group next year. Emma was also awarded CASA’s 2007 “sportsmanship award”.

“Our Boys Team was led by 17 year old Robert Maycock was has already established himself as a top player in the Caribbean. As last year’s Under 17 CASA champion he had to move up an age group and was one of the youngest players in Under 19. He should be very competitive next year in Under 19. But the strength of the Boys Team lay in the fact that we have a nucleus of 4 exceptionally strong players in Under 15. Kristian Muldoon held his No. 1 position in this age group to play in the Team Event, while his fellow Under 15 team members battled it out in both Under 17 and Under 19. For example, Micah Franklin proved he could hold his own even when playing in an older division when he triumphed as an Under 17 in the final play-off match against Barbados. Noah Browne and Chris Stout complete this formidable group of young squash stars and they will be force to be reckoned with in Caribbean squash for years to come.

Another newcomer, 11 year old Beckett Simmons also played exceptionally well and has a promising future in the Team.

All the members of our young team deserve tremendous credit for their performances during the tournament. They all gelled together as a Team, and by all accounts they thoroughly enjoyed the trip to BVI.”
