Report from Craig Archer in Barbados….

Only two Barbadian players made it safely through the today’s semi-finals which begin at 2:30 p.m. and continue until 7:30 p.m. tonight. In the girl’s under-13 age group, #2 Gylla Mackenzie (BAR) once again enjoyed a comfortable 3-0 win over her opponent, Alyssa Mullings (JAM). Gylla won 11-8, 11-2, 11-2 to set an interesting final with the top seed, Mary Jo Mahfood (JAM). This match will begin at 2:30 p.m. this afternoon. In the girl’s under-19 final the two finalists from last year will meet once more. The top local junior, Cheri-Ann Parris (BAR), who will turn 19 years old next month, will be looking to bow out of these Junior Caribbean Championships on a high CASA when she faces her nemesis from last year, Kerrie Sample (TRI). Both girls cruised into this evening’s girls under-19 final at 6:00 p.m. with easy wins in straight games over their respective opponents. Parris defeated Daina King (GUY) 11-0, 11-4, 11-2 while Sample also won comfortably 11-6, 11-6, 11-5 against Amy Gillezeau (TRI).

In all other semi-finals the top two seeds all made if safely through to their respective finals with the exception of the boy’s under-17 age group where the top two seeds both lost. The top seed, Alex Arjoon, (GUY) looked out of sorts and had no answer for the up-tempo style of the Micah Franklin (BER) who is seeded #3/4 and who surprisingly easily 11-6, 11-7, 11-4. The other BU-17 semi-final was a pulsating affair between the #2 seed, Kale Wilson, and the exciting young Kevin Hannaway (OECS), the Caribbean U-15 champion from last year. This match held the packed court #1 audience riveted from start to nail biting finish and was full of long rallies and incredible retrieving and shot making. In the end Hannaway’s superior fitness eventually prevailed as he defeated an exhausted Wilson 8-11, 11-4, 11-2, 9-11, 12-10 in just under 45 minutes.

The semi-finals of the plate competitions for the losers in the 1st and 2nd rounds will take place this morning (Monday) between 9:00 and 11:30 a.m. and then after a break for lunch the Boy’s and Girls finals in the following age groups: U-13, U-15, U-17, U-19 will begin from 2:30 p.m. with the last match scheduled for 6:45 p.m.

The Boy’s and Girl’s team competitions will begin tomorrow (Tuesday) with the official opening ceremony scheduled for 4:00 p.m. on that day at the Barbados Squash Club. Spectators are welcome and there is no admission fee all week.
