Javier Castilla 3-1 over Robbie Maycock- 5/11, 11/3, 11/6, 11/6
Juan Vargas 3-0 over Chris Stout- 13/11, 11/8, 11/6
Andres Vargas 3-0 Micah Franklin- 11/9, 11/7, 11/3
Robbie Maycock started Bermuda off with the perfect mixture of tactics for a speedy Javier Castilla of Columbia. Maycock neutralized Castilla’s speed with some tight medium pace length and some well-timed holds. Maycock was relentless in the first game pushing forward and playing the ball from the middle of the court. Castilla responded by pushing the tempo of rallies up and getting in front of Maycock with some great shots. Coach Mount on Maycock’s play “Moments of brilliance from Robbie, he’s ready for the second stage of the competition which starts tomorrow.”
Chris Stout pushed Juan Vargas in the first game but fell short with a few tins during big points. After winning the first game in extra points Vargas grabbed a hold of the momentum and didn’t let go.
Micah Franklin took on former Trinity College standout Andres Vargas. Franklin did not waste any time choosing an aggressive style of play right from the first point. Franklin was neck and neck with Vargas during the first game by getting in front and slotting in some great drops deep in the front corners. Vargas showed his match experience as he stayed consistent and won the big points.
Overall the Columbia squad were fit, fast and fair. Definitely an enjoyable match for Bermuda. The second stage matches will be determined at 8:00pm tonight. Follow the team at: http://www.squashsite.co.uk/mwt/index.htm

Actually getting to Germany for the 2011 Men’s World Team Championships may be proving more difficult than taking on former champs Australia, the flying Fin’s and Columbia!
The Team of Micah Franklin, Robbie Maycock & Chris Stout led by coach Andrew Mount are meeting up in Germany with Maycock coming from Switzerland. The other 3 are having a tough time with cancellations, delays, bad weather… all of this has resulted in 24 hrs of travel to find themselves spending the night on the floor at New York JFK amongst screaming, crying other passengers! the boys will hopefully get onto their Luthansa flight to Germany today and be there in time to don the Bermuda shorts at the opening ceremony!
The court looks pretty impressive… click on it to go to the official WTC 2011 Website
